CCS and Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) Collaborate on Guidelines!

June 22, 2006

The CCS and the CPhA are very pleased to announce publication of two articles concerning the CCS Heart Failure Consensus Recommendations in the May/June 2006 issue (Volume 139, Number 3) of the Canadian Pharmacists Journal.

"Pharmacists, in their role as drug therapy experts, can make a significant contribution to the multidisciplinary care of heart failure patients. Having access to the latest in peer-reviewed practice recommendations and guidelines is an essential component in enhancing the ability of pharmacists to provide education, monitoring and support to these patients and their families. The Canadian Pharmacists Journal appreciates the opportunity to bring the CCS Consensus Conference Recommendations on Heart Failure to its readers, fulfilling its mission to bring "knowledge into practice."

Rosemary M. Killeen, RPh, BScPhm,
Acting Editor
Canadian Pharmacists Journal / Revue des Pharmaciens du Canada

"Modern management of chronic heart failure is patient centered but with a team approach. As heart failure is a chronic disease, all health care practitioners interacting with the patient can actively contribute and enhance the effectiveness of the treatment plan. Their special expertise, along with their regular contact with patients for prescriptions, ideally places pharmacists in a position to reinforce the benefit of our current combination medication strategies, advise about aids and strategies to maximize persistence with therapy, identify rare drug-drug interactions, and provide timely counsel about perceived 'side-effects' that may or may not be drug related. Helping patients to stay on proven life saving medications will significantly enhance patient outcomes, including both quality and quantity. The Canadian Cardiovascular Society Heart Failure Consensus Conference Committees strongly support and recommend that pharmacists play an active role in bringing best treatments to all heart failure patients."
